Huntley, Ill – This would not be a tactical sit and kick type of race for Zach Albrecht of Jacobs High School when he stepped to the line for the start of the 1600 Meter Run. Friday night’s race at the Huntley Invitational was a stepping stone for what could come during this 2018 track season for Albrecht. He led from the start never surrendering the lead as he crossed the line in 4:20.96 for the win.

This was not a surprise for the junior. In his first race of the season, Albrecht ran a quick 2:01 on the 150 Meter track at Rolling Meadows. The 200 Meter track in Huntley’s sizzling track suiting him just fine.

Albrecht looked comfortable going through the first 400-meters in 62.1 and then 800-meters in 2:08.4. Four other runners braved the fast, early pace. Barrington’s Nick Laning along with Huntley’s Jadon Conroy, Jeremy Roe, and Ian Geisler. Conroy tried to stay close to Albrecht the next 400-meters as teammates started to feel the early pace. Albrecht just kept grinding the pace and pulled away in the final three laps. Conroy crossed the line second (4:26.26). McHenry’s Andrew Pilat ran a smart race staying off the fast pace early, then moving from seventh-place at 800 to place third (4:31.91).

“The race at Rolling Meadows just gave me a little more confidence of going out fast and then finishing strong,” Albrecht said after his race. “I’m shooting for 4:10 this spring.”

Albrecht showed his fitness level when he stepped up to run in the 1600 Meter Relay when one of his teammates could not run. he ran strong third leg of 53.5 seconds to open a lead allowing his team to win the section race. This junior could be one of the runners to watch when we get to Charleston in May. However, there are many more race for him to run this season.

There were several field house records that were broken in this meet. This is the third season that meets have been held in this “new” facility.

Huntley’s Dubem Anikamadu looked strong in both of his 60 Meter Dash races. He set a fieldhouse record of 7.05 in his preliminary heat. He followed that up in the finals running 6.99 to win the event ahead of his teammate Melvin Aninagyei who edged Jalon Benson of Harlem by one hundredth of a second (7.19-7.20). Anikamadu went out of his comfort zone after that running in the 400 Meter Dash and then anchoring his team’s 1600 Meter Relay. Anikamadu felt the second lap of the 400 Meter Dash after going out in 24.1 seconds for the first 200-meters. Jason Thormo of Grant pulled away in the final 75-meters of the race in running 50.97 for the win. Anikamadu crossed the line in second with a personal best 51.68 seconds. Thormo was also part of Grant’s 1600 Meter Relay that dominated the event running 3:33.84 for the win almost five seconds ahead of Section 2 winner Barrington (3:38.69). Huntley finished sixth overall.

Huntley did win the 800 Meter Relay passing Plainfield East in the final 10-meters for the win (1:34.14 – 1:34.27). In the 3200 Meter Relay, Barrington won the race 8:29.87 behind Nick Laning’s 2:02.1 anchor leg.

Brett Lucas of Stevenson waited during the 3200 Meter Run as the pace was inconsistent going from an opening 79 second 400-meter to at some points 74 second quarters. Lucas took the lead with 250-meters left in the race covering the final lap in 31.1 seconds to win (9:51.87) by ten seconds ahead of Minooka’s Jason Hoffman and Huntley’s Josh Segura. Patience was the name of the game in the 800 Meter Run as Fremd’s Ed Worthem waited to the final 50-meters to take the win (2:00.78) just ahead of Plainfield East’s Nick Pedersen (2:01.08) and Huntley’s Chris Simek.

The Shot Put was the top field event of the meet as three athletes went past 55-feet. Brad Warman of Barrington took home the win (57-5.5) ahead of Fremd’s Matt Bilek (55-5.25) and Rolling Meadows’ Will Rezny (55-4.5). Warman set a new field house record. Bilek and Rezny’s efforts were personal bests.
